Lamoille Soil
Lamoille Soil opened in 2017 to take food scraps generated in Lamoille County and turn these local, resource-rich organic materials into compost. Compost is a high-value soil amendment that improves soil’s fertility, available nutrients, and water-filtration capacity.
We opened Lamoille Soil to respond to the requirements of Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law. We wanted to offer a local destination for food scraps that are diverted from the landfill. Lamoille Soil is located in Johnson, where a long-dormant processing facility has been repurposed to compost up to ten tons of food scraps a week.
Our facility turns food scraps into compost using an aerated static pile (ASP) process. The ASP process forces air through stationary piles, creating enough heat to reduce pathogens and kill weed seeds.
Food scraps are one of the few resources that can be managed and recycled locally. Instead of filling the landfill with organic matter, which releases methane as it breaks down, at Lamoille Soil we create a valuable product that can be used locally to support positive and circular economic activity while contributing to cleaner water and soil.
