FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
DISPOSAL INFO
Some fire extinguishers can be refilled or repressurized when possible. Contact your retailer or manufacturer to learn more about this option. However, many household fire extinguishers sold today are not refillable.
If your common “ABC” compressed air, dry powder extinguisher cannot be refilled, it should be de-pressurized and dismantled:
Release the product into a trash receptacle, then remove the valve by unscrewing it from the canister.
The metal canister, once de-pressurized and empty, can be recycled as scrap metal.
The powder and valve can go in the regular trash.
Once emptied, the canister can be brought to a LRSWMD facility as scrap metal. Scrap metal is accepted at LRSWMD Johnson, Morrisville, Stowe and Worcester locations.
Please do NOT place fire extinguishers that have not been fully discharged in your trash or recycling bins.
Contact your local fire department for other disposal options.
