Lamoille Soil

Lamoille Soil opened in 2017 to take food scraps generated in Lamoille County and turn these local, resource-rich organic materials into compost. Compost is a high-value soil amendment that improves soil’s fertility, available nutrients, and water-filtration capacity.

We opened Lamoille Soil to respond to the requirements of Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law. We wanted to offer a local destination for food scraps that had been diverted from the landfill. The processing facility is located in Johnson, where a long-dormant compost facility has been repurposed to compost up to ten tons of food scraps a week!

Lamoille Soil turns food scraps into compost using an aerated static pile (ASP) process. The ASP process forces air through stationary piles, creating enough heat to reduce pathogens and kill weed seeds.

Food scraps are one of the few resources that can be managed and recycled locally. Instead of filling the landfill with organic matter, which creates methane, we’re generating a lot of value by sorting differently. At Lamoille Soil, we create a valuable product that can be used locally to create positive economic activity, help improve soil and water quality here in Lamoille, and sequester carbon.
